Grantley Hall is a country house near the village of Grantley, about five miles west of Ripon in North Yorkshire. It sits on the River Skell in 38 acres of gardens and parkland. The house is Grade II* listed, and since 2019 it has been a hotel.
The house
The hall was built in the eighteenth century for the Norton family. Fletcher Norton, Speaker of the House of Commons, became the first Baron Grantley in 1782, and the family kept the house until 1900. Later owners included the Furness family and Sir William Aykroyd. It was a convalescent home in the Second World War and became an adult education college in 1947. The Sykes family bought it in 2015 and opened it as a hotel in July 2019.
The rooms
The Music Room is the main ceremony room, with a high, ornate ceiling and plenty of daylight, for up to 120 guests. The Grantley Suite holds up to 150 for a ceremony or the wedding breakfast and opens onto a private terrace above the Japanese garden. Drinks can move out to the Orchard. The evening carries on in Valeria's, a champagne and cocktail bar in a 1920s style.
The gardens
The Japanese garden is registered Grade II in its own right. It was laid out in the early twentieth century for Lady Furness: two ponds joined by a stream, with stepping stones, moss, ferns and bamboo. Ceremonies can also be held outside on the lawns or in the Garden Pavilion, and a small summer house on the front lawn is licensed for up to 20.
On the day
Weddings of more than 100 guests take the hall on an exclusive-use basis, with 47 bedrooms and suites, so everyone can stay. I filmed Faith and Jonny's wedding at Grantley Hall in July 2025, and their film is on this page.
If you are marrying at Grantley Hall and want a film of the day, send me your date to check availability.
